What is Sogetsu Ikebana?
Sogetsu Ikebana is a contemporary school of Japanese flower arrangement founded by Sofu Teshigahara in 1927. It embraces the belief that ikebana can be enjoyed anytime, anywhere, by anyone, using any material.
Unlike traditional schools that emphasize fixed forms, Sogetsu encourages freedom of expression and creativity. Through the artful use of line, space, and balance, students learn to express their own sensibilities using natural materials such as flowers, branches, and leaves — as well as unconventional elements like metal, wood or fabric.
At Ikebana Objects, classes focus on discovering your unique artistic voice while respecting the underlying principles of design, proportion and harmony that make Sogetsu arrangements timeless.
A Systematic Way to Study
Learning Sogetsu Ikebana follows a structured and internationally recognized syllabus developed by the Sogetsu Headquarters in Japan.
Lessons use the official Sogetsu Textbooks which guide learners from foundational techniques to advanced creative expression.
- Textbook 1・2: Focuses on the essential forms, placement, and relationships between materials. Students learn how to balance line, mass, and color while understanding the use of space.
- Textbook 3・4: Introduces more freedom and experimentation, encouraging students to express individuality through various materials and styles.
- Textbook 5: Explores complex compositions, large-scale works, and installations that reflect personal artistry and deeper conceptual thinking.
Each stage builds upon the previous one, allowing students to develop at their own pace while deepening their appreciation of nature and form.
Through continuous practice, students not only acquire technical skill but also learn to see the world through a more refined, artistic lens — transforming everyday materials into personal expressions of beauty and balance.
